About the Characters

Julia Sugarbaker: Julia is the owner of Sugarbaker's Design Firm, an Atlanta-based interior design firm which she runs from her home. Julia is known for being outspoken and extremely liberal. Whether or not you agree with Julia's views, she usually leaves little doubt as to what she thinks. Her friends and co-workers have nicknamed her "The Terminator" for her outrageous behavior. Julia is a widow; she and her late husband Hayden had one son, Payne.

Suzanne Sugarbaker: Suzanne is Julia's younger sister and polar opposite. She is a former Miss Georgia-World who is known for being shallow, self-involved and materialistic. She has been married 3 times, and much of her wealth comes from alimony. Most of her dates tend to be elderly, and even wealthier than she is. Although Suzanne and Julia do share a sisterly bond, Suzanne is closest to Sugarbakers' delivery man, Anthony.

Mary Jo Shivley: Mary Jo is Sugarbakers' decorator. She is a single mother of two young children, Quinton and Claudia. Mary Jo's ex-husband, Ted Shively is a gynecologist who had affairs with his patients. Although Mary Jo is not nearly as outspoken as Julia, she does speak her mind now and then, including a speech at a PTA meeting supporting condoms in schools.

Charlene Frazier-Stillfield: Charlene is Sugarbakers' office manager. She grew up in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and stories from her childhood are a frequent topic of conversation at Sugarbakers'. Charlene is known for being big-hearted and more than a little naive. She has a very romanticized view of WWII, which led to a romance with airforce pilot Colonel Bill Stillfield. Charlene and Bill eventually married, and subsequently had a daughter, Olivia.

Anthony Bouvier: Anthony is Sugarbaker's deliveryman. Before working there, he was in prison because some friends of his held up a liquour store while he was waiting in the car. This was often referred to as Anthony's "unfortunate incarceration." During the series' run, Anthony had a number of girlfriends, and even got married in the last season. But he was always closest to Suzanne, in spite of her treating him at times like a servant.

Bernice Clifton: Bernice was very close friends with Julia and Suzanne's mother Perky. When Perky moved away, the girls promised to look after Bernice. She had an "arterial flow" problem from the neck up, which often made her say outrageous things. For instance, she liked to refer to Anthony as her illegitimate son (even though he was clearly black), and would frequently sing "Black man, black man, where do you come from?" whenever he was around.
