About Wings
Wings was created by the producers of the highly successful sitcom Cheers. In many ways, the shows were very similar: both featured a diverse group of characters who all worked together and shared the ups and downs of their lives. But while Cheers took place at a Boston bar, Wings centered on an airport on Nantucket island. The three main characters were Joe Hackett (Tim Daly), a no-nonsense, by-the-book pilot, his younger, more irresponsible brother, Brian (Steven Weber), and their childhood friend Helen Chappel (Crystal Bernard). Together, Joe and Brian ran Sandpiper Air, a one-plane airline. Much of the show's comedy came from the differences in the brothers' personalities, and Joe and Helen's on-again, off-again relationship. Other characters were Roy Biggins (David Schramm), the owner of the competing airline, Aeromass, Fay Cochran (Rebecca Schull), Sandpiper's ticket agent, and Lowell Mather (Thomas Haden Church), the somewhat dimwitted airplane mechanic. Also frequently seen was Antonio Scarpacci (Tony Shalhoub), a poor immigrant cabdriver. Later, viewers were introduced to Helen's snobby older sister, Casey Davenport (Amy Yasbeck).
The series ran for 8 seasons and is still has a loyal fanbase, thanks to reruns.
